# Field

<table data-header-hidden><thead><tr><th width="141.6597900390625"></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><div><figure><img src="https://937151318-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F44MuVIHBk5o5yfcGn64w%2Fuploads%2FywcfpfWF4waQFxe6iSsr%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=2d36f699-555b-40b0-80f7-c261962c2947" alt="" width="76"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div></td><td>Converts any figure into a spatial data field that other nodes can read from. Connect a shape as the input and plug the Field's output into a numeric property — the value each shape receives will depend on where it sits in space relative to the field.</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="success" %}
Think of Field as a "value map" stretched across the canvas. Bright areas of the input shape produce the **max** value; dark or transparent areas produce the **min** value. Every shape that samples the field gets a different value based on its position.
{% endhint %}

**Two modes depending on where you connect it:**

* **Connected to a shape property** (e.g. radius, x, rotation) — each shape in an instancing group samples the field at its own position on the canvas, so every instance gets a unique value. This is the main use case.
* **Connected with a Point node on the `sample` input** — the field is read at that single fixed point and outputs one number, which you can route anywhere a number is accepted.

<table><thead><tr><th width="155.21484375">Property name</th><th width="405.046875">Description</th><th>Compatible datatype</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>input</td><td>The figure to use as the field source. Its luminance (brightness) defines the field values across the canvas.</td><td>figure</td></tr><tr><td>min</td><td>The value output when the field reads 0 (dark / transparent area). In pixels for size and position; degrees for rotation.</td><td>number</td></tr><tr><td>max</td><td>The value output when the field reads 1 (bright area). In pixels for size and position; degrees for rotation.</td><td>number</td></tr><tr><td>sample</td><td>Optional. Override the sampling point with a Point node. When connected, the Field outputs a single number instead of a per-instance spatial value.</td><td>point</td></tr></tbody></table>

Notice that in the examples above, the Signal node is on bypass to hide it from the final rendering — you may turn its visibility on by selecting <img src="https://937151318-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F44MuVIHBk5o5yfcGn64w%2Fuploads%2FLDCwtKIymh3ad6mRekTr%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=3fafa6c5-743e-425c-8e2c-02b2aab7a57e" alt="" data-size="line"> Signal and click on the <img src="https://937151318-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F44MuVIHBk5o5yfcGn64w%2Fuploads%2FRxRHqOlfTjwBX0Sbf9ge%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=0311cf98-618d-44d1-9455-20bdd06847bf" alt="" data-size="line"> toggle.
